Hell in Paradise is Van Es’ deeply personal account of his relentless three-day journey through the aftermath of one of the deadliest natural disasters in modern history. Driven by the hope of finding his friends alive, Van Es recounts the heartbreaking destruction, the lives lost, and the resilience of the human spirit. A longtime expat in Thailand, Van Es reflects, “Even now, after 18 years, those three days remain vivid in my mind and heart. Writing this book has been a cathartic experience—one I hope will inspire and move readers worldwide.”

Michael D. Butler, founder of Beyond Publishing, recently opened an office in Bangkok to connect with authors and readers across Asia. Hugh Van Es is Beyond Publishing’s first signed author in Thailand, marking a milestone in the company’s international expansion. “We are very grateful to have met Hugh and are excited about him being our flagship author in Thailand,” says Butler. “His story of resilience and determination is an inspiration, and we’re thrilled to bring this extraordinary book to a global audience. Plans are being made to distribute Hell in Paradise, in Asia Books and Kinokuniya, the two largest book outlets in Asia.”

Van Es adds, “I’m very excited about relaunching Hell in Paradise with Beyond Publishing. The 20th anniversary edition feels like the perfect opportunity to revisit the story. Plus, with my upcoming fiction trilogy launching in 2025, the future is looking bright.”

Hugh Van Es has recently gained international media attention ahead of this launch. He will appear on MichaelD.TV to discuss the expanded edition of Hell in Paradise. Additionally, Van Es has been featured in interviews on The Bangkok Podcast in April 2024 and will appear on Indo-Thai News and on Luxembourg’s national television network, RTL in December 2024. His journey was also highlighted in the January 2024 edition of The Big Chili, Bangkok’s leading English-language magazine.

Beyond Publishing invites readers, media, and literary enthusiasts to discover Hell in Paradise this December—a tale of friendship, courage, and the will to find hope amid unimaginable devastation.
